CEC Programs Featured in American Bar Association Newsletter
ROSELAND, NJ (May 17, 2004)—Community Education Centers (CEC) correctional treatment programs were featured in a recent issue of Highlights, a publication of the American Bar Association Commission on Lawyer Assistance. The article, entitled “Breaking the Cycle of Recidivism with Treatment,” underscores the important role that CEC plays in addressing substance abuse and criminal behavior throughout the country.
The Highlights article details the strong relationship between substance abuse and crime and points to the importance of the assessment process in driving treatment protocols.
“Our programs offer state-of-the-art evidence-based assessments, substance abuse treatment, education, family counseling and aftercare services. All of CEC’s facilities provide transitional services along a continuum of care—from prison to community,” stated John J. Clancy, President and CEO of Community Education Centers. “CEC’s treatment services are geared towards two goals: helping residents achieve a successful recovery from substance abuse and successfully reintegrating them into the community,” according to Robert Mackey, PhD, Chief Operating Officer of CEC.
Recent research attests to the success of CEC’s programs in reducing recidivism. Compared with a New Jersey DOC group, CEC residents had a 27% lower rate of re-arrests, a 31% lower rate of re-convictions and a 28% lower rate of re-incarceration.
