Community Alternatives of Black Hills opened in January of 1992 and is comprised of two buildings. It has an 80-bed adult residential capacity and offers comprehensive residential and non-residential services to male and female participants. The program utilizes local community resources, which provide continued treatment and supervision following release from the program. Many participants are near release and the program is designed to facilitate each participant's transition from incarceration or criminal conduct to independent, lawful living. Case management focuses on problem assessment, treatment planning, substance abuse counseling, relapse prevention, life-skills instruction, employment assistance and release planning.

Programs Employment Skills: The comprehensive program familiarizes residents with obtaining employment in Rapid City. This program is geographic specific. Employment Skills class is required for all residents arriving at CABH unemployed.
The intensive employment skills program is designed for resident’s struggling to find employment and those not previously completing an employment skills class. Topics include interacting with coworkers and supervisors, handling job related stress, and the importance of attendance.
Life Skills: includes anger management, stress management and budgeting/money management.
Parenting: This program focuses on reuniting with your children following release. Topics include dealing with their anger, discipline, answering those hard to answer questions and adjusting to change.
Relapse Prevention and AA: Programs designed to help residents identify and combat the symptoms of relapse.
WISE: Women’s Issues (WISE): this program is a self-help program for females. Issues covered include divorce, abuse and independent living skills.
Release Planning: An educational class for residents preparing for release. This class covers such topics as finding a place to live, obtaining transportation, and interacting with your Probation/Parole officer.
Community Activities CABH participates in the Adopt a Highway program. CABH residents volunteer to assist the Black Hills Community Theatre. In addition, residents have done worked with Habitat for Humanity.
CABH has also adopted a local charity, Love Inc., which is a coalition of seventeen local churches that provides school clothes to underprivileged families in the community. CABH residents contribute to this charity each year.
