A conversation with Cathy Leathers

Deputy Director, Community Alternatives of the Black Hills (CABH)

Rapid City, South Dakota

What motivates me the most is the desire to see the happiness on our residents’ families’ faces when they are able to be with their loved one again and begin to bond into a positive family unit.”

How did you get your start working in corrections?

I started my career with CEC in January 2002 as a Resident Manager. It was different than anything I had ever done before, and initially it was quite a challenge. I moved up the line to Program Counselor in May of 2008, realizing I loved this position because I felt rewarded by being able to help the residents prepare for the community on a one-to-one basis. I was completely committed to helping residents with employment, financial planning, and helping them build stronger relationships with their families. I also worked hard to help them find housing, so they could have a successful start once released.

What are your responsibilities in your current role at CABH?

As of May 2015 I have been given the opportunity to be the Deputy Director of Community Alternatives of the Black Hills. My role now has many different responsibilities, and I continue to participate in helping and guiding the residents in the right direction. I am now learning the role of supervising staff and helping them learn what I have over the years. I have also been placed in the position of PREA Coordinator of this Agency. I continue to learn on a daily basis and can honestly say it is never a dull moment!

What advice do you have for someone thinking about a career in corrections?

This career is something that needs your undivided attention. I have learned to effectively deal with many different personalities, which is important. If you have the desire to help others and believe that if a person wants to change, they can do so, with the right direction and supportive services we provide at CABH.

What is your proudest moment at CABH?

I would have to say my proudest moment was when I was told by our Vice President of Reentry Operations for the Western Region that I have the knowledge and I know the job of Deputy Director, just do it! One of my goals for this year was to be noticed by CEC for my love and desire that I have to help with getting people back into the community successfully and living productively. I guess with such good encouragement I have met this goal I have been noticed as a valued employee, I feel very honored.

What motivates you to do your job?

What motivates me the most is the desire to see the happiness on our residents’ families’ faces when they are able to be with their loved one again and begin to bond into a positive family unit.

What do you do for fun ?

My favorite way to spend my spare time is to be with my family and my grandchildren at the lake or out boating.
