FAMILY EVENTS MARK SPRING HOLIDAYS AT TOOLEY HALL DENVER

Staff and residents at Community Education Centers (CEC)’s Tooley Hall celebrated spring holidays with events hosted by the family services department, designed to strengthen bonds and promote reunification of the family unit. Families of the residents were welcomed for Easter and Mother’s Day and special activities were created that encourage participation from family members as a way of healing. The Family Services program is a focus at the Denver facility that is comprised of 70 female residents.

 

“Our residents and staff enjoy holidays at Tooley Hall, we have a chance to host family members at the facility for interactive events, while providing an atmosphere for healing” said Angie Riffel, Director of Tooley Hall. “It is wonderful to see our families make progress and establish healthy bonds.”

 

The Family Services program is an important focus of the treatment programming provided at Tooley Hall, Denver’s only women’s community reentry treatment facility. Residents are recommended from the Denver County Board. CEC employs a reentry treatment model at the facility, with a modified Therapeutic Community (TC) program that is gender-specific with a focus on substance abuse treatment. Emphasis is placed on parenting skills, relationships, and self-esteem for women. CEC provides additional services at the facility that help women prepare for transitioning back to society and preventing further recidivism.

 

Family Service nights are held monthly and offer a chance for families to get together and share in each other’s lives. Staff supervise games and exercises that include that towards participation for family members. The staff at Tooley Hall are committed to successful reintegration into the community for their residents. An important part of the program is the focus on healing and making amends, as well as learning new coping strategies for the future.

 

A barbecue was held for Mother’s Day where multiple generations were present at the facility and enjoyed games and exchanged cards. Easter was another heartwarming event that included games and the children received prizes and candy. Residents were allowed to order food out and an ice cream social topped off the celebration. Both holidays were uplifting for residents, families, and staff, as all enjoyed an opportunity to experience the success of the events provided by Family Services.

Additional services included at the facility include comprehensive assessments, counseling, domestic violence counseling, vocational and educational training, and post-traumatic stress disorder treatment.
