A group of willing volunteers joined the 14th Annual “Slam Dunk the Junk” Newark Cleanup held on Oct. 6 throughout various locations around the city. This year staff from NJ facilities, alumni and residents from the Harbor showed up to clean up the town that is hosted every year by the New Jersey Clean Communities council, who holds several cleanups across the state.
The annual Newark cleanup, “Slam Dunk the Junk” is always attended by staff and alumni of CEC who work hard to cleanup their assigned neighborhood with rakes, shovels and brooms provided by NJCC. It was a glorious day and all enjoyed being outside to give back to the community with this worthy effort.
“Volunteering is a very important way to establish positive habits and give back to the community,” said Rich McCourt, Director of Reentry, New Jersey Operations. “Thanks to our staff, alumni and residents who showed up for this important cause.”
Where allowed, emphasis is placed on community service for those preparing to reenter society, allowing the resident an opportunity to give back and instill a positive sense of contributing to society in a productive way.
Residents, staff and alumni of CEC facilities assist with food drives for the needy, cleaning and maintaining government properties, Habitat for Humanity, local agricultural projects, local ministry assistance, and helping out at the local animal shelters as only some of the activities they serve to assist at. Many facilities have monthly community service goals that are regularly exceeded.
