Ms. Highsmith was awarded the Above and Beyond Employee Recognition Award in November, 2015
“She is recognized for being the consummate team player. Ms. Highsmith has been an unselfish mentor to others in similar roles and she has assisted with special assignments throughout the region. ” – Rodney Brockenbrough, Vice President of Reentry Operations, Eastern Region
How did you get your start working in corrections?
I was a former Minsec employee with 17 years of experience in an administrative role. I was interested in an administrative management position and CEC gave me that opportunity. I worked for other companies previously where I achieved a certification in administration. I have enjoyed working and building my career by learning new tasks. I work very hard and am always ready to undertake the next project that will help facilitate our operational needs and what serves our residents best.
What are your responsibilities in your current role at Broad Street?
I am pleased to be the “go to” person for Broad Street and other facilities in the area. I do classification, accounting, billing, HR, census, training and finance for residents. Whatever needs to be done, I am ready. I will also be taking on the roles of administrative manager for newly awarded facilities in the in-prison division for Pittsburgh and Chester, as well as continuing to visit additional CEC facilities in the Philadelphia area to manage administration there, and be support at those locations.
What advice do you have for someone thinking about a career in corrections?
What helped me very much is to have awareness of policy and procedures, and to adhere to our code of ethics in business relations. I would also advise others about the importance of listening. Listen to others, pay attention, and take notes. I am a big note-taker, I carry a notebook with me wherever I go, it has been very helpful.
What is your proudest moment at Broad Street?
When I received my award! It made me so proud to receive an Above and Beyond Award! I had no idea - I was so surprised. It is very rewarding to be acknowledged, I am so grateful, it really made me very happy.
What motivates you to do your job?
Pride in my work. I am proud of my skills and am motivated by teaching others who want to learn.
What do you do in your time off for fun?
I like to read books, ride my bike, and go to the movies. I am active in my community and attend block association meetings in hopes improving our neighborhood and keeping it safe.
