Community Education Centers to Research Recidivism at the Cheyenne Mountain Re-Entry Center
Roseland, NJ, May 23, 2006 - Community Education Centers (CEC) has entered into a contract with the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs (UCCS) to evaluate recidivism rates for residents of the Cheyenne Mountain Re-Entry Center (CMRC), Colorado's largest reentry facility.
"This contract demonstrates CEC's commitment to corporate citizenship by entering into public-private partnerships to protect public safety and advance the study of behavioral sciences," said Chris Petrozzi, CEC's Western Region Quality Manager.
Mr. Petrozzi and Dr. Ralph Fretz, Director of Assessment and Research at CEC, will work with Dr. Jody Glittenberg, the principle investigator at UCCS, and her co-investigator, Dr. Joyce Griesbach, to evaluate the rearrest, reconviction, and reincarceration data of CMRC residents. Previous studies have found CEC programs to be very effective in reducing recidivism. In fact, an outcome research study published in 2004, demonstrated that participation in one of CEC's New Jersey programs resulted in a 30 percent reduction in the rate of recidivism at one year post-incarceration.
"CEC has always recognized the intrinsic value of the university research community and the need for collaboration between academia and CEC to advance evidence-based correctional assessment and treatment. I look forward to continuing CEC's successes in the State of Colorado," said Dr. Fretz.
Researchers from the academic world have contributed significantly to the measured growth of CEC's programs by assisting the company in refining and strengthening its programs and research. Through ongoing dialogue with researchers in academia, CEC has gained important insights into improving its programs by independent analysis of its assessment and treatment processes.
In 1999, CEC created a research department with the intent of gathering and analyzing data from its programs. Since that time, the CEC Research Department has developed into a unique unit within the larger organization. CEC recognizes that to develop and foster effective treatment programs, it is necessary to support long-term outcome research. At the moment, CEC operates one of the most highly respected and productive research programs in the correctional treatment industry.
