Community Education Centers' Staff Attend National Conference on Women and Addiction
Roseland, NJ, Aug 23, 2006 - Community Education Centers (CEC) staff recently attended the National Conference on Women, Addiction, and Recovery: News You Can Use, in Anaheim, California. The conference addressed numerous topics related to gender-specific substance abuse treatment. Michelle Ryder, Director of Female Programs and Development at Liberty Hall in Indianapolis, and Dr. Angela Mims, Treatment Director of the Women's Program at Bo Robinson, CEC's New Jersey-based residential treatment center, both attended.
"As CEC continues to expand its comprehensive treatment services for female offenders, the important information gained at this conference will prove very useful. The gender-specific services that CEC provides across America demonstrate the company's commitment to providing cost-effective treatment and reentry services to female offenders," said Michelle Ryder.
As the number of incarcerated women has grown tremendously in the last decade, CEC has responded with several innovative women's programs. CEC has established women's programs at Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey; Bo Robinson Education and Training Center in Trenton, New Jersey; Tooley Hall in Denver, Colorado; and Community Alternatives of Casper in Wyoming.
Most recently, CEC opened a 250-bed women's treatment unit at Liberty Hall, CEC's residential treatment center in Indianapolis, Indiana. This specialized female residential program serves pre-adjudicated offenders from Marion County and incorporates programming that addresses the unique needs of women, including life skills, parenting issues, and reentry preparation. Program staff at Liberty Hall provide information on various topics, including: employment skills, women's health issues, domestic violence, post-traumatic stress disorder, anger management, stress reduction, relapse prevention, nutrition, relationships, budgeting and financial planning, and community resources.
"The specialized women's treatment unit at Liberty Hall represents a unique program that was designed to meet the specific reentry needs of female offenders. CEC is excited about this opportunity and looks forward to expanding its services to the growing population of female offenders," said Dr. Robert Mackey, Chief Operating Officer at CEC.
CEC's female programs utilize the Women's Federal Bureau of Prisons Drug Abuse Treatment Program and the work of Dr. Stephanie Covington's journal-based addiction/trauma recovery program for women in the criminal justice system. Gender-specific therapy groups and an aftercare program are also provided. In addition, CEC uses the Pathways to Change treatment curriculum, at its Colorado and New Jersey facilities.
