CEC Family Services Interns Present at AAMFT Conference
Roseland, NJ, Nov 14, 2006 - Interns from Community Education Centers' Family Services Program presented at the 64th Annual American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Conference in Austin, Texas in October. The interns presented during the seminar, "Tales of Pride and Shame: Couples Therapy in Prison."
The AAMFT conference, "Nurturing Nature: Behavior, Genetics, and Therapy," gathered the world's leading experts on therapeutic approaches to treating families. Conference topics included Substance Abuse, Trauma and Abuse, Assessment and Diagnosis and were presented in a variety of formats, from plenaries to small workshops, 5-hour institutes, and a research poster section.
"I am very proud of these interns' work and congratulate them for their participation in this important conference. The education and information learned at this conference will only better prepare these interns to provide quality family services to CEC residents and their families," said Dr. Lou Barretti, Director of CEC's Family Service Program.
CEC's Family Services utilizes interns through a cooperative effort with Dr. Muriel B. Singer, Director of Marriage and Family Therapy at Kean University. In addition, interns from Seton Hall and Iona Universities participate in CEC's Family Services Program.
The CEC family program addresses the multiple stressors facing families that have an incarcerated love one. By providing treatment for the entire family, the program helps all members of the family system cope with the experience of incarceration; maintain family connections; address pre-existing family problems, as well as the issues created by incarceration; and prepare for reentry into the family and society. Upon release, families are referred to community-based agencies where they continue the work they began during the period of incarceration.
