Seton Hall Basketball Coach Speaks with Talbot Hall Residents
Roseland, NJ, Dec 12, 2006 - Bobby Gonzalez, Seton Hall basketball coach, addressed offenders at Talbot Hall, Community Education Centers' 500-bed residential reentry center in Kearny, New Jersey on December 12, 2006. This was Coach Gonzalez's second visit to Talbot Hall.
"I appreciate the opportunity to speak with the men of Talbot Hall. Through my career as a basketball coach I have learned that perseverance is the most important factor in obtaining one's goals. As these men prepare to leave Talbot Hall and reenter society their perseverance combined with the education and treatment learned at this facility will be crucial factors in their pursuit of crime-free and productive lives," said Coach Gonzalez.
Talbot Hall opened in 1998 to provide assessment and treatment services to adult male offenders referred from the New Jersey Department of Corrections. While residing at Talbot Hall, residents are assessed for levels of re-offense risk and intervention needs. The treatment component consists of individual and group counseling, substance abuse treatment, educational services, vocational training, skills-based trainings, family services, and aftercare/alumni services.
"Coach Gonzalez's compelling life story and professional success works well with our program of assisting individuals work hard to better their own lives. His insights on and off the court will provide inspiration and education to our reentry population," said Sheila Leonardo, Director of Talbot Hall.
Coach Gonzalez was named Seton Hall's coach this April and is known for his tireless work ethic which has earned him countless accolades. His best season came in 2003-04, when he guided the Manhattan College Jaspers to a 25-6 overall record and defeated No. 5 seed Florida in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Coach Gonzalez received numerous accolades following this season, being named NABC District 2, USBWA, and NYBCA Division I Coach of the Year as well as receiving Metropolitan Coach of the Year recognition for the second straight year.
