Harbor Residents Speak With New Jersey Students
Roseland, NJ, Aug 15, 2007 - Residents of the The Harbor, CEC's 152-bed residential reentry center, served as guest speakers through a youth services program at Orange High School in New Jersey. Meeting and speaking with students, the residents shared stories of inspiration regarding their incarceration and experiences in a reentry program.
"Their message of hope, perseverance and excellence was greatly needed and well received. All the staff at Orange SBYSP Program observed that they really connected with the students. Many students found the stories of the guest speakers motivating, as well as thought provoking. It is not often that we see someone able to hold their attention as they did," wrote Senate Maxwell, Orange High School Employment Counselor, in a letter of thanks.
The Harbor, located in Hoboken, New Jersey, provides residential treatment and a work-release program to male inmates. The treatment component focuses on substance abuse treatment, education, life-skills, employment, and community reintegration. The goal of the treatment component is to highlight the pitfalls of past behaviors and thought processes, while offering concrete suggestions for change.
"I am very proud of the efforts of these men. To meet and talk with these students is an invaluable experience for everyone involved," said Tom Brady, Director of The Harbor.
Upon successful completion of the treatment phase at The Harbor, residents enter a work-release phase, beginning with job-skills classes. Through job-skills classes and work-release experience, residents develop desirable work ethic, including reliability, task competence, interaction with authority, and punctuality. In addition to maintaining employment, residents in the work-release phase continue to attend individual counseling sessions and participate in psychoeducational lectures and groups.
