CEC Presents to Colorado Probation Officers

Roseland, NJ, Sep 21, 2007 - Community Education Centers' (CEC) staff presented to Arapahoe County Probation Officers at the Arapahoe County Justice Center on September 21. The presenters, Kara English, Clinical Director/Program Coordinator at CEC's Tooley Hall and Colorado State University doctoral student, Christina M. Sigala, spoke on the topic, "Women, Professionals, Wives - Offenders."

"This was a great opportunity for our two organizations to collectively share knowledge regarding female offenders. Collaborative efforts such as this only serve to further the missions of each agency," said Kevin Duckworth, Mountain Regional Manager at CEC.

Presenter Kara English has worked with female offenders in treatment for over ten years through private and state monitored programs. Ms. Sigala, an adjunct professor for Metro State College in Denver (MSCD, has presented over the last five years on the subject of Indigenous Mental Health, concentrating on people of American Indian and Mexicana/o decent.

"I enjoyed making this presentation to Arapahoe County Probation Officers and would like to thank Ms. Sigala for her participation. As female offender populations rise, it is important that we understand their unique needs to provide them with effective treatment," said Ms. English.

CEC provides a wide array of reentry services for female offenders in Colorado. The Arapahoe County Residential Center (ACRC) located in Littleton, is a 114-bed community corrections facility housing female felony offenders. ACRC functions as a transitional placement for offenders released from prison and also an alternative sentencing option for the court system. Residents work in the community and defray the costs of confinement through room and board payments. ACRC operates a community version of the Correctional Recovery Academy (CRA), a comprehensive curriculum for training residents in a battery of cognitive and psychosocial skills that are essential for a life free of criminal and drug habits.

In Denver, CEC operates Tooley Hall, a 60-bed community corrections program for adult female offenders. Tooley Hall works with community agencies to ensure that its female participants receive appropriate treatment services, and that they are prepared for independent community living. Case management maintains a focus on women's special needs and issues. Topics that are addressed include parenting, domestic violence, substance abuse treatment, relapse prevention, GED preparation, employment assistance and life-skills training. CEC also provides reentry services to female offenders at Correctional Alternative Placement Services (CAPS) in Craig, Colorado and Community Alternatives of El Paso County (CAE) in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
