CEC Research Article Published in Offender Substance Abuse Report
West Caldwell, NJ, Feb 22, 2008 - The article, "Enhancing Treatment Readiness: The Role of the Assessment Center in Prisoner Reentry," authored by Dr. Scott L. Cone, Deputy Director of Treatment for Talbot Hall and Tully House at Community Education Centers, Inc. (CEC), was published in the January/February edition of the Offender Substance Abuse Report.
"As this latest article illustrates, CEC's assessment centers effectively prepare offenders for treatment. The professionalism of our staff and the ability to address the individual needs of each offender in our care, contribute directly to the effective delivery of CEC's reentry services. The results are cost-effective solutions that reduce recidivism," said Dr. Fretz, Director of Assessment and Research at CEC.
From an analysis of assessment test results from 730 residents at Talbot Hall, CEC's 500-bed residential assessment and treatment center, Dr. Cone discovered that residents' desires to receive treatment services was higher at discharge than at intake. Using results from the 'Desire for Help Scale' from the Texas Christian University's assessment instrument, the Client Evaluation of Service and Treatment (CJ CEST), Dr. Cone found that the assessment/treatment reentry model created by Community Education Centers, Inc. increases a residents desire to both recognize the criminal behaviors that lead to their incarceration and receive appropriate treatment.
"The CEC treatment model is effective in promoting a healthy desire to change in those offenders who enter the program with minimal recognition that their criminal lifestyle is problematic," wrote Dr. Cone.
CEC operates one of the most highly respected and productive research programs in the correctional treatment industry. In 1999, Community Education Centers (CEC) created a Research Department with the intent of gathering and analyzing data from its programs. Since that time, the CEC Research Department has developed into a unique unit within the larger organization. CEC recognizes that to develop and foster effective treatment programs, it is necessary to support long-term outcome research.
