CEC Secure Facilities Division Staff Outperform Hurricane Ike
West Caldwell, NJ, Sep 15, 2008 - As hurricane Ike barreled into Texas' coastal communities last week, CEC staff began readying their facilities for the dangerous storm's onslaught. Arriving on shore as a strong category 2 storm with winds over 100 mph, Ike was met head-on by CEC's Secure Facilities Division.
"I would like to congratulate all of our Secure Facilities Division staff who went the extra mile to ensure the safety of our facilities, offenders and most important, the public, during this dangerous hurricane. Their outstanding performance and dedication are commendable," said George Vose, Senior Vice President for Operations at CEC.
At the Liberty County Jail in Beaumont, Warden Tim New remained at his facility through the hurricane even after he had found out that a forty foot pine tree had fallen through his own home. Warden New then lead the evacuation his offenders as flooding rendered his facility to dangerous to occupy.
Warden Eugene Harbin at the IAH Secure Adult Detention Facility in Livingston, Texas evacuated 758 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICEC) detainees from his facility at the decision of ICE. Warden Harbin then provided assistance to Orange County, Matagorda County, Liberty County and Polk County to accommodate 460 offenders at IAH throughout the hurricane.
"Our wardens and their staff deserve a special thank you for their swift actions during Hurricane Ike," said Jim Shaw, Director of CEC's Secure Division.
Warden Mike Sutton at the Limestone County Detention Center in Groesbeck, Texas prepared housing in his facility and welcomed 200 ICE detainees. Warden Sutton also prepared 500 more beds for evacuees from CEC facilities and the United States Marshals Service.
Both Warden Mickey Hubert at the Kinney County Detention Center and Warden Mike Wilson at the McLennan County Detention Center and Falls County Detention Center took in evacuated offenders. Warden James McCormick at the Bowie County Correctional Center prepared space for female offenders from both Polk and Liberty Counties. Warden Ron King at the Parker County Jail, offered 150 beds for the United States Marshals Service as did Warden Alan Ballard at the Dickens County Jail. Warden Ken Stewart at the Lufkin County Detention Center remained at his facility without incident during the storm.
