CEC Alumni Lead Reentry Workshop at New Jersey Black Issues Convention

West Caldwell, NJ, Oct 9, 2009 - Arthur Townes, Community Education Centers, Inc. (CEC) Alumni Association Director, was by joined by guest panelists Wanda Moore, Esq., Director of the New Jersey State Reentry Program, New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, Ingrid Johnson, Esq., Darcella Sessoms, New Jersey Department of Corrections, Manager of the Office of Reentry for the City of Newark, Cuqui Rivera, Case Manager, Newark Prisoner Reentry Program, Dr. Elnardo J. Webster, Superintended of Schools, Roselle Public Schools and fellow CEC alumni for a workshop on prisoner reentry at the New Jersey Black Issues Convention in New Brunswick on October 9.

"I would like to thank all the members of this panel for making this workshop such a success. Their contributions reentry issues in New Jersey makes our State a trailblazer in successfully ex-offenders with the tools and assistance needed to lead productive lives," said Arthur Townes.

Over one hundred conference goers attended the workshop which examined the effect of incarceration on minorities and the efforts in New Jersey to effectively reenter ex-offenders back into their home communities. Arthur Townes and his Alumni Association staff shared experiences of their personal journeys from incarceration through the reentry process.

The CEC Alumni Association is comprised of former offenders who have successfully completed a CEC reentry treatment program. The Alumni Association assists these ex-offenders in their transition from treatment back into the community. As mentors, alumni are available to offenders, before and after release, to provide referral assistance and encourage them to set goals, find jobs, and utilize social services.

The Alumni Association holds monthly meetings at CEC's New Jersey facilities, including Tully House, Delaney Hall, Talbot Hall, Logan Hall and Bo Robinson, as well as Coleman Hall and Hoffman Hall located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the meetings, alumni return to speak with current residents and share stories about their journey toward successful community reentry.
