Texas Students Learn About Dangers of Drugs and Crime

West Caldwell, NJ January 04 -
High school students in Brackettville, Texas, received a positive message as part of "Operation Detour" a presentation designed to inform teenagers about the dangers of drugs and crime. Al Castillo, Warden, and Captain John Bealefeld of the Kinney County Detention Center were invited by Border Patrol officials along with the DEA to participate in the presentation, who considered prison representatives to be an important element in Operation Detour.

"We appreciate having an opportunity to bring this important message of living a crime-free lifestyle and staying out of prison to young people, and providing awareness about the dangers of drugs and crime," says Warden Castillo.

Warden Castillo and Captain Bealefeld made a great presentation to the young crowd, giving them a clear picture of what life in prison is like. They brought props of prison clothing, cuffs, and leg irons to illustrate the harsh realities of what life is like behind bars. The Kinney County Detention Center team encouraged the teens to stay in school, and not give in to peer pressure. Their intention was to give a very clear picture of what life in prison is like, and the consequences that are suffered as a result of crime.

"When you are in prison there is nothing glamorous about it, and we wanted to get that across to the teens. There is nothing "cool" about being a prisoner," says Warden Castillo.

They received excellent response from the 50 ninth graders, with good Q & A at the end. Warden Castillo fielded questions regarding the reality of prison life. The Border Patrol and DEA also presented and showed a film, warning teens of recruitment and violence of the drug cartels.
