Let it Grow! Liberty Hall Donates Garden Vegetables To Local Food Pantry

West Caldwell, NJ September 18 -
Liberty Hall in Indianapolis, Indiana reaped a bountiful harvest from the facility’s on-site garden this year. The garden project was conceived and coordinated by Eric Dyer, an Eagle Scout and son of Liberty Hall Business Manager Tom Dyer. Eric and his team of scouts and facility residents planted the vegetables in the spring and watched as they flourished into a full and plentiful garden throughout the month of August.

A group of male residents helped the scouts construct the garden at the north end of the courtyard and female residents took over tending, watering and weeding the newly planted seeds. A garden committee of volunteers had been doing the work led by Program Specialist Jennifer Evans. The garden project will be ongoing and will also serve as the new community service project for female residents at the facility.

“The garden project has been a great opportunity for all here at Liberty Hall,” said Curtis Langhammer, Director. “Our residents have shown a lot of interest in the work and are enjoying seeing rewards from their hard work reap positive benefits. CEC values community service as an important element in reentry treatment which allows individuals an opportunity to give back to the community and instill a positive sense of contributing to society. ”

Several different types of vegetables were planted including tomatoes, zucchini, radishes and onions. As the garden is harvested, vegetables will be donated to the Second Helpings Food pantry in Indianapolis, a non-profit community kitchen.

Liberty Hall provides reentry/work release programming to male and female residents referred from the Indiana Department Of Correction and male residents from Marion County Community Corrections.
