Talbot Hall Staff and Alumni Visit School to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

West Caldwell, NJ January 26 -
The life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was honored by the CEC Alumni Association and staff from Talbot Hall through a volunteer effort at a New Jersey high school. The CEC group visited Westside High School in Newark and joined students to paint school pendants that will hang in the hallways of the school.

“We are honored to participate in this commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King by supporting the importance of education in our community,” said Arthur Townes, Director of the CEC Alumni Association. “Alumni members are living proof that lives can be changed by programs of rehabilitation, education and lifestyle changes.”

The CEC group joined in painting college pendants as a way to encourage the students to pursue higher education. The pendants will hang in the hallways of the school as a colorful display of college symbolism to appeal to the students.

“Talbot Hall has been successful in attaining educational milestones for its residents, so we are proud to give back to the community with this powerful message of Dr. King’s,” said Sheila Leonardo, Director of Talbot Hall. “We provide GED preparation and encourage the residents to resume their education upon release.”

Educational training is a standard at many CEC facilities and some facilities are official GED testing sites. Residents have earned their GED through educational programming offered by CEC which is delivered by highly trained counselors. Some offer connections through programs to local colleges and universities as a means to providing a gateway to pursuing higher education.

Staff and alumni were proud to acknowledge the contribution of Dr. Martin Luther King by supporting the shared mission of the importance of education to the local student community.
