Alumni/Aftercare
CEC established an aftercare component which consists of former offenders joined as an alumni group that provide a foundation of support to help residents get through the process of change during their aftercare phase of reentry. Alumni assist residents as they transition from treatment back into the community through the provision of supportive services. CEC recognizes that residents need support and referrals after release as they face the obstacles and difficulties associated with remaining pro-social members of their families and communities.
Alumni members are comprised of former residents who have successfully completed a CEC program. Ex-residents that are no longer supervised in the criminal justice system and have been successful in the community serve as role models for the residents as they transition back to society. As mentors, alumni are available to residents, before and after release, to provide referral assistance and encourage the residents to set goals, find jobs, and utilize social services.
To aide in the social reintegration forum, Alumni involve themselves in community service projects. Alumni members take pride in being role models for change; they volunteer to do crime/drug prevention talks, volunteer to clean communities, assist at food banks, do public speaking engagements, and participate in mentoring opportunities. These responsibilities help assist the offender transitioning back into the community and, in some cases, assist the resident to make amends for their past anti-social actions.
“Being a resident in a CEC treatment program was the beginning of a new and positive life for me. I am now crime and drug free and very grateful for an opportunity at a new start. I enjoy giving back to my family, peers, and being there as a support for others reentering society.”
